To be prepared for war is one of the most effective means of preserving peace

Disasters

This category examines potential disasters, how people in the past 'weathered the storm', and how we might give ourselves and edge if they happened again. (Starvation for example.

You can also view the Case Studies for individual events, like 9/11 and what can be learned from these tragedies.

Your location will have the greatest impact on your preparations. Someone living in Arizona will prepare differently than someone in Ontario.

I have tried to list the Disasters in a combination of most likely to happen, severity and how much effort it would take to prepare for this specific event.

Go through the Disasters and knock off the most common ones for your particular area. As you become more prepared, go back and try to determine which of the Disasters you skipped are likely to become more prevalent in your area as things like global warming progress. Keep an eye out for 'once in a lifetime' Disasters that seem to keep happening again and again.

Remember: Each of these Disasters can easily cascade into numerous others. For example, if Hyper Inflation were to take hold, it could easily spin to both economic collapse and then infrastructure collapse. Once things start to get this bad, you will probably be looking at the possibility of civil unrest and maybe another Great Depression.

One big problem with trying to prepare for a specific disaster is you never know where you are on the downward spiral. The more you understand about each link in the chain, the better prepared you will be to react to what might be coming.

Also, keep in mind while the general population might be unaware how bad things are, there will be some who do know and take advantage of it. At the beginning of the pandemic China kept reporting there was no problem to the outside world, but inside China people were scared. The Chinses diaspora quickly snapped up all masks in every country, leaving nothing the the locals.
