To be prepared for war is one of the most effective means of preserving peace

Protection

When discussing protection in the prepper community the conversation usually centers around firearms and ammunition. I would agree that firearms are a part of prepping, but (here in Canada at least), we need to really think of a multi layered approach to protection that stays firmly on the legal side of the law.

** Carrying or using a firearm against a person for any reason is highly illegal and almost always will land you in jail. In my mind they should be reserved as a 'Mad Max', the government has collapsed situation. **

How you approach security will differ before an event, at the onset of an event, and after an event. Even the severity and length of the event should influence your planning. If you think about each aspect beforehand you will be less likely to be caught off guard. For me, prepping is not about one huge decision, but a million little ones that will give you the edge on survival.

Before an event

Because carrying or using a weapon at all is illegal here in Canada, the first step would be an EDC item you can protect yourself with while still ensuring you are compliant with the law. Being locked up during a SHTF event would probably prove fatal for most people.

During an event, this EDC item should hopefully allow you to get to your car to access more equipment, which will hopefully get you home.

While many people would choose a knife, I think it's a bad idea for just everyday walking around. More liabilities than benefits.

My tool of choice would be a small high powered flashlight. Go ahead and read my justification in the link before you scoff at me.

Onset of an event

Trying to prepare for a specific event, or loading up equipment for every conceivable event is not practical.

We need an item that can be carried every day, is not threatening or illegal but can cause damage if needed.

My choice is a steel barrel pen.

The tool is specifically in my EDC as a writing device, but like the flashlight can be used for self defense in extreme situations. In my mind the only reason to use it is to get yourself home during a SHTF event. Either a personal one (like a kidnapping) or a wider event like food shortage riots, where people are loosing their minds.

If you do end up using this tool defensively try not to seriously injure someone. Remember, you may still be held liable for Duty of Care. Stabbing someone in the throat with a metal object is very different than jabbing them in the leg and running away. (again consult a lawyer).
