To be prepared for war is one of the most effective means of preserving peace

While this is an American lawyer, the concept of what he says applies in Canada.

** Taken from level 0 *************
For example: During the Great North America blackout of 2003 power went out all over North America. When it actually happened we all had no idea how long it would last. My girlfriend at the time went out on the streets and had beer with friends. I was at work and kept driving. Life continued.

If the power remained out for months we would all be in a desperate situation, but no one was looting and killing to gain resources for that eventuality.

** Contrast that with Katrina.

The Takeaway: If you misjudge a situation, you will be held liable. Shoot or stab someone breaking into you home (in Canada) during the power outage and you are going to jail. It doesn't matter how scared you were.

Canadians don't have a Bill of rights, but the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

In Canada a lot of our laws are based on whether something is considered reasonable or not. So, while we don't have a Castle Doctrine, you can use up to lethal force to defend yourself if (******attacked and is considered reasonable. It is not considered reasonable to use deadly force merely to defend your property though.

Surprisingly, we don't seem to have a duty to retreat, especially here in Ontario. If someone breaks into your house and you can safely leave you are not legally compelled to do so.

In the states a witness has the fifth amendment. In Canada you cannot be compelled to testify against yourself, but other witnesses can be compelled to testify against you, even if it incriminates themselves. They are granted immunity from prosecution for anything they testify to though.
