Preparation Preparation
So many of the preparedness options we discuss are meant give you many tiny edges when dealing with disasters. Statistically, the chance of you having a fire or a hurricane or another great depression in your lifetime are pretty low. Cumulatively the chance of something traumatic happening to you in your lifetime is much greater.
Having a plan, skills and equipment to deal with each disaster ahead of time allows you to have the confidence to handle things if they arrive.
Remember: While these situations don't happen often, when things go bad it's not a 20% problem but a 100% problem: Most people lead fairly safe lives, but when a family member receives a traumatic injured, you don't get a do over. You save their life, or they die. Fires are pretty rare but when your house burns down, you can't just resolve to try again tomorrow. You need to deal with the aftermath for years.
The good thing about putting plans and training in place for specific contingencies, is that skills translate to different arena's: In the process of getting your ham license, you are learning a lot of the foundation skills you need to repair electronics. Learning to grow herbs in your garden for food also allows you to grow medicine for injuries and add antibacterial properties to soap.
