Communication

Communication

Being able to communicate during a SHTF situation will be invaluable.

The scariest part of many events will be not having accurate information on what is happening. Local radio, TV and phone/cell service might be out, but shortwave radio might still be available. Being able to get information from outside your country could also be advantageous if local government is 'spinning the story' to keep everyone calm.

Local radio and TV may be telling you one thing, but actually talking with people on the ground will give you a better idea of what is going on.

There are a variety of different radios that would be useful in a SHTF situation, each with their own benefits.

Shortwave Radio: Good for listening to news from around the world. If the local area that you are in is cut off from outside countries, it would be nice to get an outside view of how the world really is. (Image if 'The handmaids tale' actually came true. It would be nice to hear outside info). You cannot transmit with a Shortwave radio, just listen.

Ham Radio: Definitely the most versatile type of radio to get into. Depending on the radio, and antenna setup, you can get into almost any type of communication, from long distance, to local communication. Good for when the phone system goes down. Able to use repeaters for extra range.

CB Good local 2 way radio for the road. Limited to 4 wats. Think talking with other people on the road, and hearing about accidents up the road. No license needed.

GMRS: CB, but with extra power, but less people on the bands. Good for communicating while off-roading, or a convoy of people traveling on the highway. No license needed in Canada, but you do need one for the states. Unlink CB you can use repeaters for extra range.

A repeater is a device that receives your signal and then rebroadcasts it on another channel. This allows you to communicate with others further than you could with just your radio.
