Water Filtration

If everything falls apart, fresh water is going to be a deadly problem for lots of people. In an urban environment depending on a natural local source of water is not ideal. Water filters work great if you had access to a water source a few minutes away, but few people do.

The problems with water:

Here are the main problems as I see them:

Do you know where to go in your local area to obtain water if you don't have access to a car?

A family of four needs about 16 liters of water per day which will weigh about 38 Lbs. Can you carry that much from the water source home daily?

What will you do about protection? Lot's of people will eventually decide taking water from others will be easier than lugging it themselves. What will you do if you loose your water bucket or backpack of water bottles?

Most water you find in urban environments is going to be contaminated. Can you filter it with what you have on hand? Drinking contaminated water will make your situation infinitely worse.

My situation

I have two reasonable sources of drinking water in my area. One is a small lake that takes rainwater runoff from storm drains, about 20 minutes away.

The second is a tiny river used to carry rain runoff about a 45 minute walk away.

Both of these sources are not idyllic. I can't imagine the toxic mix of chemicals washed from our roads that will be in both. Lawn pesticides, oil, fuel etc. Not all of these things can be filtered from water with DIY methods. If you can prepare ahead, do so now.

Unfortunately man people will fail to do so.
