A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

Life Straw

One small drawback is not practical to filter water, and carry it with you.
These are made to put directly into the dirty water and drink. However, you don't have to carry filtered water. If you can fill up, just grab dirty water and filter it through the straw as you go (just remember it's dirty!).

We have one of these each in our BOB, (cheap buy from Costco).

If we were in some kind of long term situation where we would have to use them, I would probably try to construct some kind of Emergency Filter to pre filter the water. The dirtier the water, the faster they will fail.

Emergency:
You can tie a bag around the straw with an elastic band, and pour bad water into the bag and clean will come out

Prepare ahdead of time. Buy hydration bag with hose and rig something?
