What I wish I knew
Set up auto waterer immediately. I intended on setting up rain barrel catchment system, so I hand watered everyday while I set it up, but wasted so much time.
Set up auto waterer from wall, then work on system every day. it takes a while
stagger seeds in time when planting before hand. Will become root bound, but also might die of frost or squirrels.
Give away extras.
Have a plan, write it down ahead of time, figure out number of plants and times for each square.
Some plants sprout very fast (mustard), and some you need to start 6-8 weeks ahead of the last frost. Focus on starting the slower plants, and plant the fast one's directly outside.
Don't bother sprouting fast growing root crops inside, just sow directly outside.
I made the mistake of sprouting the same amount of each plant. This ended up being too many of some plants and not enough of others.
(Eg you might only need 1 eggplant and 1 backup, but 16 chives for one square.)
Stagger backups in time. If you start all your seeds at the same time.
** not sure if this goes here, but:
Check where your seeds come from. They are probably adapted to this weather. Get local when you can. If not, plant many versions of each plant, and when you harvest, keep each separate. Rate each for things like size, taste, color, and how fast they grew. Keep the seeds from the one's that did best. Slowly acclimate your seeds to your location. THis will take a while, so get on it ASAP.
