SF Gardening
While Square Foot Gardening has a lot of benefits for our type of gardening, it's not a final solution unto itself. The peat moss suggested in Mel's mix is not a renewable resource, and both it and it's substitute coconut coir along with vermiculite could not be locally sourced during an emergency, so were going to have to think of an alternative.
What I love about SFG how is fully thought out the system is:
It uses pest and disease management using a very Permaculture approach of mixing crops up to confuse pests and stop disease travel.
It packs in a lot of food (quantity and diversity) in a small area, utilizing both time and 3-d space.
Finally it has many add-ons that have been designed to enhance your garden. Cages to protect it, watering systems and trellis plans are all included.
SF Gardening seems like a great way to begin gardening before making it your own.
The SF Gardening book is easy to understand and well laid out, so I won't be going over anything they cover, but what I do differently, and why.
