At some point these two concepts should be almost the same.

If you are growing food for yourself in your home garden, you should be able to scale it up for your entire block if you are doing it right.
While it may be tempting to keep to yourself, even a very religious man is willing to steal when his family is starving. Sooner or later you will have a problem with people stealing your harvest if things get really bad. Being surrounded by a well fed block should not only keep you safer, but you would be able to work out a neighborhood watch to keep an eye on everyone's food.

The basic idea of SHTF gardening is to set things up in a way that doesn't need outside inputs to keep things running. There are many situations where you will not be able to run to the local Home Depot and grab fertilizer, topsoil, etc.
