If you watch the news, during a riot, police are pulled back and told to guard critical infrastructure, while people are left to themselves.
even worse...
As things start to break down and get worse and worse, you will no longer be able to depend on the police to show up when called.

If you come home and your house has been broken into, having the basic ability to clear a house becomes invaluable.

Warning: Don't do this unless things have gotten really bad. Just call the police.
Maybe relate our experience about N's parents, and how we just wandered around, but you should get out and call police.
